Murrysville Meals-On-Wheels is actively monitoring the situation with regard to the COVID-19 virus, better known as the Coronavirus. At this time, we do not foresee any major disruptions to the preparation and delivery of meals to our homebound clients.
Since its inception Murrysville Meals-On-Wheels has been dedicated to providing local homebound residents with nutritious meals and more. An all-volunteer force of over 200 operates this community service. Four days a week, fifty-two weeks a year, teams of cooks gather at 8:30 am to prepare the homebound meals with care. Then at 10:30 am the delivery teams take over to visit the recipientís homes. In addition to home delivered meals these teams provide the important plus of personal contact; a quality missing from the day to day lives of many a homebound person. This contact not only reassures the recipient that someone is concerned about them; but should they need emergency assistance the delivery teams know where to call.
Our Mission is to provide a complete nutritious hot lunch plus a cold supper to people who find it difficult to prepare meals for themselves because of poor health, disabilities, or lack of kitchen skills. This helps individuals remain in their own home and be independent for as long as possible. According to a recent government survey 40% of the elderly in nursing facilities today would not need to be there if this service had been available to them. Aging In Place, National Council For Aging Care states: "Nearly one in every six seniors in America faces the threat of hunger and not being properly nourished. This applies to those who arenít sure where their next meal is coming from and those who donít have access to the healthiest possible food options. The issue is severe enough that the AARP reports that seniors face a healthcare bill of more than $130 billion every year due to medical issues stemming from senior hunger."
If you or someone you know might benefit from home delivered meals please contact Murrysville Meals-On-Wheels.
Meals-On-Wheels would also like to hear from you if you are looking for a very rewarding volunteer opportunity to help provide this much needed community service. There is always a need for cooks, drivers, shoppers, substitutes, cookie bakers, etc. Murrysville or your local Meals-On-Wheels chapter can benefit from almost any donation of time, talent, supplies, or support you can imagine.
Kindness and caring are a big difference in making this a better world.
